Bringing Life-Sustaining Water to Rural Communities in Kashmir

Donate an Electric Water Well to Transform Lives in Rural Kashmir

In the remote mountain areas of rural Kashmir, access to clean and reliable water is a daily struggle. Families trek miles through rugged terrain to collect water from often contaminated sources, jeopardising their health and well-being. The Kashmir Project is dedicated to changing this reality by providing electric water wells to the most needy communities, ensuring a sustainable supply of clean water.

We can place a plaque in your name on the well, and we will send you a report with key information about your well including where it is built and who is benefiting. If no name for a water well is given in the ‘notes’ section, when donating, Greengate Trust will set the plaque to the name the donation was made in.

On the authority of Sa‘d bin ’Ubadah  that he said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Umm (mother of) Sa‘d has died, so which charity is best?’ He (saw) replied, ‘[Providing] water’.  He (ra) said, ‘So [Sa’d] dug a well and said, “This (well) is for Umm Sa‘d”’.

Give A Beautiful Sadaqah Jariyah

The Prophet (PBUH) described providing drinking water as the best charity. A well is a Sadaqah Jariyah; when you provide a water well to a vulnerable community, you reap the rewards for years to come, as the well continues to provide clean water year after year.

‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ  was asked, “Which charity is best?” He (saw) replied, “(Providing) water”’.

The Importance of Electric Water Wells

Electric water wells play a crucial role in providing a consistent and effortless water supply. Unlike traditional hand-pumped wells, electric water wells can pump large volumes of fresh water without the physical effort required to operate a hand pump. This means:

  • Increased Efficiency: Electric wells can draw water faster and more efficiently, ensuring that communities have access to water whenever they need it.
  • Reduced Physical Strain: Eliminating the need for hand-pumping reduces the physical burden on villagers, particularly women and children, who often bear the responsibility of water collection.
  • Sustainable Supply: Electric pumps can reach deeper water sources, providing a more reliable and sustainable supply of clean water.

All donors will also receive their own individual well-completion report via email

You will receive an email confirmation within 10 days, (please check your junk), our team will then start the process and once completed you will receive a feedback report with further details and images.

We aim to complete all wells between 3 to 6 months of your donation, however at certain times of the year it may be completed sooner or take a little longer. We work closely with the team on the ground to make the process as quick as possible.

Although it is impossible to give an exact lifespan, we estimate up to 10 years.

The communities where the well is placed will highlight any issues with the wells and our ground team will cover any maintenance costs for up to 1 year. After this the well will be maintained by locals. The cost of maintenance in considerably low compared to the cost of the well.

We send out a feedback report for each well which contains some general information on the well, some images of the well being built, some images of the well in use and some details of the location, should you wish to visit.

We ask donors to allow our field team to make this decision, as they are aware of where the most need is at the time of the donation.

Ideally, way say or one or two full names, along with a short message such as "In Memory of". Although there are no restrictions on how much text can be put on the plaque, this will affect readability and result in the font size being smaller than the images you may have seen on our website and social media. Please note we are unable to accommodate images, symbols, any other language than English, or anything that may be deemed offensive.

Please note, videos are not included as standard. The build team always try their best to capture a video of each well, but due to time restraints is not always possible. If a video of your well has been captured, it will be sent to you after you have received the feedback report, this being the priority.

Unfortunately, we are not able to give regular updates on progress, due to the admin time it would take and wanting to keep costs as low as possible, to continue to be a 100% donation charity. After the initial communication, the next communication you will receive is the feedback report, by email.

All donors will be contacted within 10 days to set expectations and give them timescales.
