Celebrating International Volunteer Day

This year, Greengate Trust has again had the involvement of some amazing volunteers, who give their time to support our projects.

To celebrate International Volunteer Day, we caught up with Eisa, who completed a placement with us last year. To find out about his experience and his views on the importance of volunteering.

My name is Eisa, and I currently work as a teaching Assistant in a local school while also studying for my A-levels. Alongside all of that, I volunteer whenever I can, because being part of a community isn’t just something I do, it’s something I genuinely love. Balancing teaching, studying, and volunteering might sound intense, but for me, it’s one of the most rewarding parts of my life.

What was the reason you chose to volunteer?

I chose to volunteer because I really wanted to give back and be part of something bigger than myself. Working in a school has shown me how powerful small actions can be-a bit of support, a smile, a safe space, it all adds up. Volunteering lets me see the impact first-hand: happier pupils, a calmer environment, and real change within the community. Plus, it gives me a sense of peace and purpose that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Why do you think volunteering is important?

Volunteering is vital — not just for the community, but for individuals too. It strengthens connections, supports those who need an extra hand, and creates environments where people can grow, feel safe, and feel seen.

For young people especially, volunteering teaches lessons you can’t learn from textbooks. It builds compassion, leadership, independence and shows you the true value of teamwork. It reminds us that we’re all part of something, and that every action -no matter how small-contributes to someone else’s wellbeing. In a world that’s always moving, volunteering forces us to slow down and simply help. And that’s powerful.

What have you gained from volunteering?

Honestly? I’ve gained soo much!

Volunteering has transformed my confidence. It pushed me into public speaking, decision-making, problem-solving, and communicating with people of all ages and backgrounds. I’ve developed leadership skills, patience, empathy, and the ability to stay calm in busy or challenging situations.

These aren’t just “nice to have” skills — they’re real, valuable, life-long strengths. Skills that help with teaching, working in a team, studying, and anything I take on in the future. Volunteering doesn’t just make you helpful — it makes you capable.

What would you say to people who are unsure about completing a volunteer placement?

If you’re unsure, here’s my honest advice: Go for it. 110%.

Volunteering is life-changing. It builds your character, opens your eyes, and gives you experiences that stay with you forever. You meet new people, learn new skills, challenge yourself in the best way, and most importantly, you make a real difference.

Even the smallest hour you give can change someone’s day.
